It’s October, which means Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  You may think you’ve heard everything regarding breast cancer but I’d like to share some things  you may not know.  As a physical therapist, I decided several years ago to specialize and became a certified lymphedema therapist.  For a period of time I worked exclusively with breast cancer patients who had or were at high risk for lymphedema.  Lymphedema is a potential side effect for breast cancer patients who have had lymph nodes removed either from their armpits or breast tissue. Lymph nodes can also become damaged from radiation treatment. From treating these amazingly brave women I witnessed first hand all the side effects they endured from their breast cancer treatment.  It became my mission to learn as much as I could about breast cancer; what women can do to improve their recovery, decrease their risk of reoccurrence and preventative measures for those who don’t have it. I am sharing with you some of what I have learned….
